External Works Team, NY Highways

NY Highways are growing our External Works team.  This is an excellent chance to become part of team working on a diverse array of projects.  These works supplement the guaranteed work that NY Highways delivers on behalf of North Yorkshire Council.   As a result, we can offer a confirmed, long-term and secure portfolio of works that you might wish to be part of.

We have multiple positions open for individuals with hands-on highways experience.  As a member of the External works team, you will join a site-based team delivering specific projects across North Yorkshire.  We have immediate vacancies for Gangers, Highly Skilled Craftspeople, Skilled Operatives and Operatives.  Details of the individual roles can be found below.

Role Responsibilities

Supervision and On-site Team Leadership (Ganger)

You'll oversee and supervise external highway works, including managing supply chain partners. You'll lead and direct teams to complete projects as specified and on schedule, whilst undertaking key aspects of the work.

Specialist and General Maintenance Work

You'll handle a range of specialist tasks, including installing kerb lines, drainage systems, footways, carriageways, and modular paving. You'll also carry out general maintenance such as site upkeep, digging holes and trenches, and maintaining roadside verges.

Highway Construction and Repairs

You'll be involved in highway construction activities, including inlay/contour patching and renewing ironworks. You'll ensure the proper installation and upkeep of street furniture and other highway structures. 

Traffic Management

You'll implement and manage traffic control measures to ensure safety during construction and maintenance activities.

Equipment Operation

You'll operate a range of equipment essential for routine, cyclical, and new build works, ensuring projects are executed effectively and efficiently. Excavator and dep drainage tickets are required for certain roles.
