What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking candidates who bring technical expertise, experience, a flexible mindset, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Ideally, you’ll have:
- BS7671/18th Edition qualification
- City & Guilds 2330 Level 3 and 714 Inspection & Testing
- Strong knowledge of electrical repairs, testing, and installations
- Understanding of current legislation and health & safety standards
- Full UK Driving Licence
- Willingness to take part in out-of-hours emergency callouts (rota basis)

About the Role
As a Ganger, you’ll lead a team of at least four operatives, delivering maintenance and construction works across Thirsk and surrounding areas. From kerb installation and drainage repairs to footway construction and traffic management, your work will directly impact the safety and quality of our roads.
You’ll also:
- Ensure works are completed to specification and on schedule
- Manage supply chain partners and coordinate site activities
- Operate equipment and carry out routine and cyclical maintenance
- Participate in out-of-hours call-outs for emergencies and winter maintenance
This is a physically active, outdoor role requiring a good level of fitness. Full PPE and outdoor clothing will be provided.

What You’ll Do
As a Highly Skilled Craftsperson, you’ll apply your expertise to deliver high quality highways maintenance and construction works. Your responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out skilled tasks such as kerbing, drainage repairs, patching, ironwork renewal, modular paving, and installing street furniture.
- Applying specialist skills in areas like stonemasonry, bricklaying, resurfacing, or road marking.
- Operating specialist tools and plant equipment safely and effectively.
- Completing risk assessments and maintaining accurate records using handheld devices.
- Working collaboratively with your team and stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in highways maintenance or construction.
- Specialist skills in at least one area: stonemasonry, bricklaying, kerbing, paving, resurfacing, or road marking.
- A relevant Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience.
- Strong understanding of health and safety practices.
- Confidence using plant and equipment relevant to your expertise.
- Flexibility to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including occasional unsocial hours.
- Willingness to undertake training in traffic management, manual handling, and operated plant (e.g., 360 excavator, dumper, roller).

About the role
As a Highways Skilled Operative with LGV / Lead 2 Person Crew, you’ll work as part of a team delivering a variety of highways maintenance activities, including:
- Kerbing, drainage installation, patching and ironwork renewal
- Installation and maintenance of street furniture
- General site maintenance, excavating trenches and holes
- Traffic management and routine cyclical works
- Maintaining roadside verges and operating relevant plant and equipment
If appointed as Lead 2 Person Crew, you’ll take responsibility for leading small two‑person crews as part of your role
This post includes participation in an out‑of‑hours call‑out rota for emergencies and winter maintenance, so a driving licence and access to personal transport are desirable.

NY Highways is looking for a Highways Operative to join our teams based from Seamer Carr or Whitby, working across the stunning East Coast and surrounding rural areas of North Yorkshire.
This is a great opportunity to join the business at an entry level, receive full training and qualifications and progress your career within highways maintenance.
What you’ll be doing
As part of a supportive, experienced team, you’ll help maintain and improve the local highway network, carrying out a wide range of routine and seasonal works, including:
- General highway maintenance such as site clearance, verge works and sign cleaning
- Excavating holes and trenches and assisting with drainage and minor repairs
- Supporting traffic management and safe working practices on site
- Operating highways plant, tools and equipment (full training provided)
- Using handheld devices to record work and defects
- Supporting winter maintenance activities, including snow clearance and gritting operations
You’ll also take part in an out‑of‑hours call‑out rota for emergencies and potentially winter maintenance — an important role that helps keep communities moving in all conditions.

Role Overview
NY Highways is looking for a skilled Street Lighting Installation Operative to join our Street Lighting Department. In this active outdoor role, you will be at the forefront of our construction projects, specialising in the excavation and installation of lighting columns and signage across the county, with over 52,000 streetlights and 8,000 signs across North Yorkshire.
If you enjoy practical work, operating heavy machinery, and seeing the immediate results of your efforts in the community, this is the role for you.
What You’ll Be Doing
Working as part of a specialist team, your daily responsibilities will include:
- Excavation & Reinstatement: Carrying out groundworks on highways and footpaths using asphalt, flags, and block paving.
- Installation: Assisting with the physical installation and repair of street lighting columns and associated assets.
- Plant Operation: Safely operating LGV Class 2 vehicles and HIAB equipment for lifting and positioning infrastructure.
- Site Safety: Setting up traffic management and ensuring all works meet health, safety, and quality standards.
- Technical Support: Assisting electrical operatives with maintenance tasks and ensuring underground services are handled safely.
What You’ll Need
Essential:
- Proven experience in excavation or groundworks (ideally within highways or utilities).
- A strong understanding of safe digging practices and underground service awareness.
- LGV/HGV Class 2 Licence.
- Fitness and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Strong commitment to health and safety
- A strong team player who works collaboratively with electricians to ensure high‑quality outcomes.
Desirable:
- HIAB (Lorry Loader) certificate (training can be provided for the right candidate).
- NRSWA (Street Works) qualification.
- Basic electrical awareness or experience in street lighting.
