Are you an experienced Street Lighting professional ready to take the lead in delivering safe, efficient, and innovative electrical engineering services?
Join NY Highways as a Street Lighting Supervisor and play a key role in managing the day-to-day operations of our electrical engineering activities. From major works to cyclical maintenance and third-party contracts, you’ll oversee a wide range of projects that help keep North Yorkshire illuminated and safe.
This is a hands-on leadership role where you’ll manage operatives, mentor apprentices, and ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. If you’re passionate about quality, safety, and team development, we want to hear from you.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Supervising and managing operatives and depot operations
- Overseeing planned and emergency electrical engineering programmes
- Maintaining accurate site records and supporting budget planning
- Ensuring compliance with HEA/HERS standards and assessments
- Leading staff appraisals, onboarding, and mentoring of apprentices
- Setting safety performance measures and promoting a positive team culture
- Supporting delivery of major and minor works, passenger transport, and third-party contracts
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- City & Guilds Level 3 (or equivalent) in Electrical Installation
- 18th Edition Wiring Regulations
- Experience in highway electrical activities (repairs, testing, installation)
- Knowledge of legislation and guidance related to street lighting and electrical design
- Ability to travel across North Yorkshire
Desirable:
- Leadership experience in supervising teams and managing depot operations
- Familiarity with HEA/HERS staff assessments and compliance
- Strong communication and mentoring skills

About the Role
As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you’ll play a key role in supporting the commercial function of our operations. Working closely with our Senior Commercial Officer and Quantity Surveyor from our Northallerton office, you’ll help ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Supporting profitability forecasts and cost/value analysis
- Administering contracts and subcontracts, including payments and change procedures
- Evaluating and negotiating changes and final accounts
- Preparing financial reports and maintaining accurate records
- Applying standard methods of measurement and pricing
- Visiting sites across North Yorkshire to assess progress and performance

What We’re Looking For
- A team player with Working towards or prepared to work towards a HND or degree in Quantity Surveying
- Awareness of commercial and financial impact on works/scheme delivery
- Experience of cost forecasting, management and control processes including the use of contract programmes, change and risk registers
- Strong communication and IT skills (MS Office, Outlook, MS Project)
- A proactive mindset and attention to detail
- A valid UK Driving Licence (essential for site visits)
- A passion for learning and growing within the industry
· Experience of working with Contract Documents for Highway Works and knowledge of standard forms of construction contracts such as NEC is not essential but would be advantage for this role. We can provide training and mentoring to build this knowledge

Your Role as Lead Operative
You’ll be hands-on and lead by example, taking responsibility for:
- Skilled tasks including kerbing, drainage, patching, ironwork and street furniture installation.
- Supervising a team of two on maintenance projects such as paving, asphalt laying, fencing, signage, and vegetation management.
- Ensuring all work complies with health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Supporting traffic management and general site upkeep.
- Working flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours shifts.

What You’ll Be Doing
- Carrying out 1st and 2nd fix joinery across commercial sites
- Supporting emergency repairs, planned maintenance, and capital projects
- Operating trade-specific tools and constructing access platforms
- Collaborating with supervisors, contractors, and internal teams

What We’re Looking For
- NVQ Level 3 in Joinery (or equivalent time-served experience)

Are you a qualified Plumber looking for a role that offers variety, stability and the chance to make a real impact?

From emergency repairs to planned upgrades, your work will help keep essential infrastructure running smoothly across North Yorkshire.
This is a hands-on role where no two days are the same. You’ll be part of a supportive team, delivering high-quality plumbing and heating services while ensuring safety and compliance at every step.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Installing and repairing plumbing and heating systems across commercial sites
- Responding to emergency callouts and participating in our out-of-hours rota
- Supporting capital projects and planned maintenance programmes
- Using and maintaining tools and equipment safely, including mobile towers and low-level access gear
- Collaborating with supervisors and stakeholders to ensure efficient job completion
- Contributing to project planning, including risk assessments and method statements
- Mentoring apprentices and junior staff

What You’ll Be Doing:
You’ll play a key role in maintaining and improving our properties. Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out a wide range of general maintenance tasks including building, drainage, brickwork, joinery, plumbing, glazing, plastering, flooring, painting, tiling, fencing, and roofing.
- Supporting both planned maintenance and emergency response workstreams.
- Operating tools and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Assisting tradespeople (e.g. Joiners, Plumbers) on more complex jobs.
- Handling materials, receiving deliveries, and keeping work areas tidy and organised.
- Using handheld devices to record completed work and report defects.
- Following health and safety procedures, risk assessments, and method statements.

Construction Supervisor
Location: Based at any NYH Depot (Northallerton, Thirsk, Brompton on Swale, Scarborough, Kirby Misperton, Skipton, Boroughbridge) with travel across North Yorkshire

Are you a hands-on leader with a background in construction and property maintenance?

You’ll manage teams, oversee health and safety, and ensure projects are completed to high standards—on time and within budget.

- Site Management Safety Training Scheme

What You’ll Be Doing
As a Skilled Operative, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality highway maintenance projects, including:
- Kerbing, paving, and resurfacing footways and carriageways
- Operating power tools and specialist equipment
- Working collaboratively with a skilled team to meet safety and quality standards
- Following our Safety, Health, and Environmental policies to protect yourself and others
What We’re Looking For
We welcome applicants with experience in highways maintenance or similar roles. To be successful in the role you will have some of the following:
- Deep excavations, shoring, and drainage work
- Confined spaces and reinstatement experience
- Banksman, Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheel, Emergency First Aid
- Safe Dig certification
- Valid Driving Licence (HGV/LGV is a plus)
- NRSWA and Traffic Management (TM 12D)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility for occasional out-of-hours work
