NY Highways is looking for a proactive HIAB Driver / Electrician’s Assistant to join our Street Lighting team. 🔧 What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll play a key role in maintaining over 52,000 street lights and 8,000 signs and bollards across the region. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Operating LGV Class 2 vehicles with HIAB attachments.
  • Assisting electricians with installing lighting columns and connection pits.
  • Excavating and reinstating highways using materials like asphalt, flags, and block paving.
  • Managing traffic risks and ensuring safe working environments.
  • Performing manual excavation – keeping active while you work!

 

✅ What We’re Looking For

  • A current LGV Class 2 licence (or higher)
  • Experience (or willingness to learn) operating HIAB equipment
  • Someone who enjoys hands-on work and working as part of a team
  • A safety-first attitude with a commitment to doing the job right
  • · Previous experience in highways or street lighting is not essential for this role but is an advantage

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking candidates who bring technical expertise, a flexible mindset, and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Ideally, you’ll have:

  • BS7671/18th Edition qualification
  • City & Guilds 2330 Level 3 and 714 Inspection & Testing
  • Strong knowledge of electrical repairs, testing, and installations
  • Understanding of current legislation and health & safety standards
  • Full UK Driving Licence
  • Willingness to take part in out-of-hours emergency callouts (rota basis)

Operative with LGV

Highways Operative with LGV – Thirsk Depot (Area 2)

Salary: From £28,254 per year (Grade 3)
Contract: 
Permanent, Full-time (40 hours per week)

NY Highways is looking for a Highways Operative with LGV to join our Thirsk-based team. Whether you're already in a similar role or looking for a change, this is your chance to be part of a close-knit crew delivering essential improvements across your local area.

 

What you’ll be doing

As a Highways Operative with LGV, you’ll work closely with a Ganger to carry out a variety of skilled tasks, including:

  • Kerbing, drainage installation, patching, ironwork renewal, and street furniture installation
  • General site maintenance, traffic management, and roadside verge upkeep
  • Operating specialist highways plant and equipment
  • Driving and operating vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, including conducting safety checks

This role includes participation in an out-of-hours call-out rota for emergencies and winter maintenance. A Class 2 Driver’s Licence (Category C) is essential, and access to personal transport is desirable.

This is a physically active role requiring outdoor work in all weather conditions. Full PPE, including outdoor clothing, will be provided.
