Duties & Responsibilities:
- Diagnosing faults and completing repairs using modern diagnostic equipment.
- Servicing, inspections and routine maintenance on a range of vehicles.
- Preparing vehicles for MOT and brake testing.
- Ensure work is carried out in line with the workshop and H&S procedures.
- Work in line with NY Highways policies and procedures and be aware of the obligations for employees under these.
- Comply with health and safety policies, organisational statements and procedures.
What You’ll Bring:
- Class C licence.
- Level 3 qualification or equivalent mechanical experience.
- Diagnostic experience across multiple brands.
- Ability to work flexibly and get stuck in.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
While we work closely with North Yorkshire Council, NY Highways is an independent business and not part of the council itself.

About the Role
We’re looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Fleet Assistant / Administrator to join our team in Northallerton. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in supporting the operational efficiency of our fleet services, which include over 240 vehicles and equipment, as well as 96 North Yorkshire Council IPT buses and community minibuses.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be responsible for a variety of administrative tasks, including:
- Managing bookings and service schedules
- Raising invoices and processing documentation
- Recording and analysing operational data (e.g., fuel usage)
- Supporting compliance with DVSA transport regulations and MOT centre administration
- Assisting with driver hours legislation and fleet record-keeping

About You
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Previous experience in fleet administration, motor trade, or a similar environment
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- Good literacy and numeracy abilities
- A customer-focused approach and ability to work collaboratively
- Flexibility to travel to other depots across North Yorkshire when required
- Knowledge of transport compliance and DVSA regulations is highly desirable.

About the Role
As a Ganger, you’ll lead a team of at least four operatives, delivering maintenance and construction works in Boroughbridge and surrounding areas. From kerb installation and drainage repairs to footway construction and traffic management, your work will directly impact the safety and quality of our roads in the local community.
You’ll also:
- Ensure works are completed to specification and on schedule
- Manage supply chain partners and coordinate site activities
- Operate equipment and carry out routine and cyclical maintenance
- Participate in out-of-hours call-outs for emergencies and winter maintenance
This is a physically active, outdoor role requiring a good level of fitness. Full PPE and outdoor clothing will be provided.

What You’ll Do

- Carrying out skilled tasks such as kerbing, drainage repairs, patching, ironwork renewal, modular paving, and installing street furniture.
- Applying specialist skills in areas like stonemasonry, bricklaying, resurfacing, or road marking.
- Operating specialist tools and plant equipment safely and effectively.
- Completing risk assessments and maintaining accurate records using handheld devices.
- Working collaboratively with your team and stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in highways maintenance or construction.
- Specialist skills in at least one area: stonemasonry, bricklaying, kerbing, paving, resurfacing, or road marking.
- A relevant Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience.
- Strong understanding of health and safety practices.
- Confidence using plant and equipment relevant to your expertise.
- Flexibility to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including occasional unsocial hours.
- Willingness to undertake training in traffic management, manual handling, and operated plant (e.g., 360 excavator, dumper, roller).

As a Skilled Operative, you’ll work alongside experienced colleagues to deliver essential infrastructure improvements. From kerbing and drainage to traffic management and emergency callouts, your skills will help keep North Yorkshire moving.
What you’ll be doing
As part of a supportive, experienced team, you’ll help maintain and improve the local highway network, carrying out a wide range of routine and seasonal works, including:
· Kerbing, drainage, patching & ironwork repairs
· Street furniture installation & general site maintenance
· Traffic management and verge upkeep
· Operate highways plant & equipment
· Drive LGV vehicles over 7.5 tonnes (safety checks included)
· Join the out‑of‑hours rota for emergencies & winter maintenance

The Job
- Groundworks: digging, reinstatement, tarmac, flags, block paving
- Install lighting columns & roadside assets
- Operate Class 2 LGVs + HIAB lifting equipment (Hiab training offered)
- Set up traffic management + work safely on site
- Support electricians with basic tasks underground and above ground
What You Need
- Experience in groundworks, utilities or excavation
- Safe digging + underground services knowledge
- LGV/HGV Class 2 licence
- Fit for outdoor work & safety‑focused

NY Highways are growing our External Works team. We have a Skilled Operative position open for individuals with hands-on highways experience. As a member of the External Works team, you will join site-based team delivering specific projects across the different infrastructure in North Yorkshire. Working on projects ranging from busy towns to rural areas.

As a Highway Skilled Operative you will…
- Deliver a wide range of skilled highways maintenance tasks, including kerbing, drainage repairs, patching, ironwork renewal, modular paving, and installing street furniture.
- Operate plant and equipment safely and effectively to carry out general maintenance and repairs in line with health and safety standards.
- Assist with cable detection and traffic management duties.
- Accurately complete risk assessments, record work and defects using handheld devices, and take responsibility for tools and equipment.
- Contribute to the upkeep of roadside verges, excavation works, and site maintenance as part of routine and cyclical operations.
To be successful in this role you will…
- Have experience in highways maintenance or construction, with the ability to carry out a variety of skilled tasks such as drainage, kerbing, paving and surfacing.
- Hold a relevant Level 2 qualification or equivalent experience in highway maintenance.
- Demonstrate a good understanding of health and safety practices, including risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Be confident using plant and equipment, with training provided where necessary.
- Be a team player with strong communication skills and a proactive, flexible approach to work.
- Be physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including unsocial hours as part of an on-call rota.
- Be willing to undertake further training in areas such as traffic management, manual handling, and emergency first aid.
