Highways Operative with LGV – Thirsk Depot (Area 2)
Salary: From £28,254 per year (Grade 3)
Contract: Permanent, Full-time (40 hours per week)

NY Highways is looking for a Highways Operative with LGV to join our Thirsk-based team. Whether you're already in a similar role or looking for a change, this is your chance to be part of a close-knit crew delivering essential improvements across your local area.
What you’ll be doing
As a Highways Operative with LGV, you’ll work closely with a Ganger to carry out a variety of skilled tasks, including:
- Kerbing, drainage installation, patching, ironwork renewal, and street furniture installation
- General site maintenance, traffic management, and roadside verge upkeep
- Operating specialist highways plant and equipment
- Driving and operating vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, including conducting safety checks
This role includes participation in an out-of-hours call-out rota for emergencies and winter maintenance. A Class 2 Driver’s Licence (Category C) is essential, and access to personal transport is desirable.
This is a physically active role requiring outdoor work in all weather conditions. Full PPE, including outdoor clothing, will be provided.

At NY Highways, we are continuing to grow, and with the help of our people, we are the highways services and maintenance provider of choice to both private and public sector clients across North Yorkshire and neighbouring areas.
We are looking for someone with experience in the highway or construction industry to join our Seamer Carr, Whitby or Kirby Misperton depots as a Supervisor. Our teams are proud to deliver projects that matter such as revitalising town centres, improving flood resilience, supporting the development of new schools across North Yorkshire, making a real difference in the communities we serve.
There are other secured projects planned along the East Coast and around Kirby Misperton that you can be involved in, which will see vast improvements made across these parts of North Yorkshire. You will be based from one of these depots, but there will be times when you will be required to work in other areas to support a variety of projects that NY Highways deliver.

What you’ll be doing:
As a Supervisor, you’ll take the lead in overseeing highways operations—ensuring quality, safety, and environmental standards are met across all projects. You’ll manage and motivate a team of operatives, subcontractors, and fellow supervisors, ensuring work is delivered efficiently and to a high standard.
Working closely with the Senior Supervisor, you’ll coordinate daily operations at the depot, including planning labour, materials, plant, and traffic management to meet streetworks requirements. Your strong organisational skills will help you maintain accurate site and financial records, monitor progress, and forecast spend against project plans.
You’ll also play a key role in developing your team—coaching and mentoring colleagues to build capability and support career progression across the workforce.

- Proven experience in highways or construction (Ganger level or above)
- Knowledge of traffic management (TM1, TM2, T7)
- Understanding of health & safety and quality assurance
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Willingness to undertake further training (e.g. Winter 6159 Supervisor Unit 621)

About the Role
As a Ganger, you’ll lead a team of at least four operatives, delivering maintenance and construction works across Thirsk and surrounding areas. From kerb installation and drainage repairs to footway construction and traffic management, your work will directly impact the safety and quality of our roads.
You will also:
- Ensure works are completed to specification and on schedule
- Manage supply chain partners and coordinate site activities
- Operate equipment and carry out routine and cyclical maintenance
- Participate in out-of-hours call-outs for emergencies and winter maintenance
This is a physically active, outdoor role requiring a good level of fitness. Full PPE and outdoor clothing will be provided.
What We’re Looking For
Essential:
- Level 2 qualification in highway maintenance or equivalent experience
- Strong knowledge of health & safety legislation, risk assessments, and safe systems of work
- Proven experience leading and directing a team
Desirable (training provided if needed):
- Banksman, Manual Handling, Abrasive Wheels, Emergency First Aid, Safe Dig
- Traffic Management TM1 and TM2
