The Opportunity
As a Quantity Surveyor, you'll be responsible for managing costs, forecasting profitability and providing commercial support throughout the lifecycle of highway projects.
You'll work closely with Project Managers, NEC colleagues, clients, designers and key stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered efficiently, safely and successfully.
Key responsibilities include:
- Cost forecasting and budget management
- Reviewing contract programmes and risk registers
- Monitoring project profitability and cash flow
- Producing cost, value and budget comparisons
- Supporting commercial decision-making across multiple projects
- Building effective relationships with clients and project teams
This role offers flexibility to work from any NY Highways depot office across the county, with regular travel to Northallerton and project sites throughout North Yorkshire.
A full UK driving licence is essential.
What We're Looking For
We're seeking a commercially minded professional who enjoys solving problems, building relationships and delivering results.
You'll ideally have:
- An HND (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline
- Quantity Surveying experience, ideally within highways, civil engineering or infrastructure
- Membership of, or willingness to work towards membership of, a professional body such as RICS, CIOB or ICES
- A CSCS card, or willingness to obtain one
- Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities
- A collaborative approach and the ability to build strong working relationships

Duties & Responsibilities:
- Diagnosing faults and completing repairs using modern diagnostic equipment.

- Work in line with NY Highways policies and procedures and be aware of the obligations for employees under these.

What you’ll be doing
As part of a supportive, experienced team, you’ll help maintain and improve the local highway network, carrying out a wide range of routine and seasonal works, including:

- Excavating holes and trenches and assisting with drainage and minor repairs
- Supporting traffic management and safe working practices on site

This is more than a driving role. You'll be part of a dedicated team delivering essential highway maintenance services, operating specialist gully cleansing equipment and responding to emergencies as well as supporting winter maintenance activities when required.
What you'll be doing
In this role, you will:
- Operate specialist gully tanker vehicles to clean and maintain highway drainage systems.
- Carry out routine inspections and identify drainage defects or issues requiring further attention.
- Complete daily vehicle checks and maintain accurate records using handheld devices.
