Duties & Responsibilities:
- Diagnosing faults and completing repairs using modern diagnostic equipment.
- Servicing, inspections and routine maintenance on a range of vehicles.
- Preparing vehicles for MOT and brake testing.
- Ensure work is carried out in line with the workshop and H&S procedures.
- Work in line with NY Highways policies and procedures and be aware of the obligations for employees under these.
- Comply with health and safety policies, organisational statements and procedures.
What You’ll Bring:
- Class C licence.

What We’re Looking For
We’re keen to hear from experienced highways or construction professionals who:
- Have proven experience at Supervisor / Agent / Foreman / Manager level
- Bring strong leadership and people management skills
- Understand highways delivery, construction processes and safety standards
- Have knowledge of contracts (NEC, ICE, JCT) and CDM regulations
- Hold relevant qualifications (HNC, NVQ Level 4 or equivalent experience)
- Have Traffic Management knowledge (TM qualifications desirable)

NY Highways is looking for a Highways Operative to join our team based from Whitby, working in and around the North Yorkshire coast.
This is a great opportunity to join the business at an entry level, receive full training and qualifications and progress your career within highways maintenance.
What you’ll be doing
As part of a supportive, experienced team, you’ll help maintain and improve the local highway network, carrying out a wide range of routine and seasonal works, including:
· General highway maintenance such as site clearance, verge works and sign cleaning
· Excavating holes and trenches and assisting with drainage and minor repairs
· Supporting traffic management and safe working practices on site
· Operating highways plant, tools and equipment (full training provided)
· Using handheld devices to record work and defects
· Supporting winter maintenance activities, including snow clearance and gritting operations
You’ll also support our internal surface treatment programme, including Slurry works across Whitby, Scarborough and further inland. This will involve assisting experienced operatives with the preparation and application of specialist treatments used to extend the life of highway surfaces. Full training will be provided, giving you the opportunity to develop additional skills as part of your career progression.
You’ll also take part in an out-of-hours callout rota for emergencies and potentially winter maintenance, an important role that helps keep communities moving in all conditions.

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a student or graduate seeking a year in industry opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting the delivery of highways and infrastructure projects across North Yorkshire.
The role:
As an Operations Engineer, you will work alongside experienced professionals across a range of workstreams including capital schemes, highways maintenance, surface treatments and drainage works. You will play a key role in helping deliver projects safely, efficiently and to a high standard. The role will involve travel across North Yorkshire, a company vehicle will be provided for this travel.
Day to day tasks will vary but include:
· Assist in the day-to-day delivery of highways works programmes
· Support site supervision activities including inspections, inductions and safety checks
· Contribute to Health and Safety planning and safe systems of work
· Help coordinate materials, plant and labour
· Monitor project costs and support financial processes
· Work collaboratively with contractors, partners and stakeholders
· Support traffic management planning
· Attend site meetings and contribute to progress updates
· Assist with data capture, reporting and performance monitoring
You will play an integral role in supporting the delivery of highways works programmes, assisting with a wide range of operational activities to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently and to the required standards. As a Contracts and Buying Placement, you will support the delivery of procurement and commercial activities that ensure value for money, compliance with regulations, and effective supply of goods and services across the organisation. You will gain exposure to real projects, working alongside experienced professionals across a variety of commercial functions.
What you will be doing
You will play an important role in supporting procurement and commercial activities across the business, helping to ensure the effective delivery of goods and services. Working with guidance from experienced colleagues, you will assist with tender preparation, supplier evaluations and contract processes, while ensuring compliance with regulations.
You will help monitor budgets and expenditure, support financial reporting, and contribute to contract management activities such as tracking supplier performance and attending review meetings. The role also involves working closely with internal teams, raising purchase orders, processing invoices and supporting data analysis and reporting.
Throughout the placement, you will gain insight into procurement strategy, supplier engagement, contract administration and the commercial inputs required to support operational delivery.

We’re looking for a Maintenance Manager to join our Highways Operations team and help deliver vital services that keep North Yorkshire moving.
About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing service and make a real difference to local communities.
As Maintenance Manager, you’ll:
- Lead and manage a team of up to 15 Highway Officers
- Oversee day-to-day highway maintenance and inspections
- Ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to agreed standards and service levels
- Manage budgets and performance, identifying efficiencies and improvements
- Respond to emergencies and support winter maintenance operations
- Work closely with partners, contractors, and the public
You’ll be mainly office-based, with regular site visits and travel across the county.

About you
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- Strong highways and maintenance experience
- Proven experience leading and motivating a team
- The ability to manage budgets, prioritise workloads, and deliver results
- Confidence working across multiple systems and interpreting data
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders
- A calm, professional approach, especially when dealing with challenging situations
A relevant qualification (HNC/HND or similar) is desirable, but we will consider equivalent experience.
