Mechanic (Fleet Fitter) – NY Highways

Duties & Responsibilities:

• Diagnosing faults and completing repairs using modern diagnostic equipment.
• Servicing, inspections and routine maintenance on a range of vehicles.
• Preparing vehicles for MOT and brake testing.
• Ensure work is carried out in line with the workshop and H&S procedures.
• Work in line with NY Highways policies and procedures and be aware of the obligations for employees under these.
• Comply with health and safety policies, organisational statements and procedures.

As a Highways Operative with LGV:

You will work closely with a Ganger to carry out a wide range of skilled tasks including kerbing, drainage installation, patching, ironwork renewal, street furniture installation, and more. You'll also tackle general maintenance duties like site upkeep, traffic management, and roadside verge maintenance and operate specialist highways plant equipment and tools to complete maintenance and repair work. This role will involve the driving and operating of vehicles above 7.5 tonne and carrying out vehicle safety checks.

This role involves participation in an out-of-hours call-out rota for emergencies and winter maintenance activities, and therefore desirable that the successful candidate hold a current Drivers Licence with access to personal transport.

It is essential for consideration for this role that you have a current valid Class 2 Drivers Licence (Category C), as the role involves driving and operating Long Goods Vehicles (LGV).

This role presents an exciting opportunity to take on larger and more complex projects in your area of expertise while using specialised highways plant equipment and tools for maintenance and repair work.

This is a physically active role, requiring you to work outdoors in all weathers, therefore a reasonable level of fitness is required. You will be provided with full Personal Protective Equipment including outdoor clothing.

What You’ll Do

We’ve recently obtained a brand new Volvo FL / 42 R' Lining vehicle, so you’ll be working with modern equipment to apply a wide range of markings using both thermoplastic and paint.

The role is specifically working for the County’s Highways Service, so travel as part of the role will only ever be within the County of North Yorkshire, a big benefit if you want to limit work related travel time.

What you’ll be doing:

No two days are the same. You’ll be:

• Applying road markings using thermoplastic and paint systems

This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their career and play a key role in leading the safe and efficient delivery of highways and construction activities. Working closely with the Senior Supervisor, you will help plan and coordinate operational works, support depot operations, and develop the people around you.

Based at Selby, you will contribute to a range of highways maintenance and improvement schemes across the area and, where required, support projects in other operational areas.

The role

As a Supervisor, you will provide day-to-day leadership to operational teams, ensuring works are completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.

You will be responsible for:

• Supervising highways and construction activities on site.
• Planning and programming labour, plant and materials to meet operational requirements.
• Assessing traffic management requirements and ensuring compliance with Street Works legislation.
• Monitoring quality, environmental and health and safety standards.
• Maintaining site, performance and financial records.
• Supporting the day-to-day running of the depot.
• Coaching and developing operatives to build capability and support succession planning.

What we're looking for

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

• Significant experience in highways or construction activities at Ganger level or equivalent, with a proven track record of delivery.
• Experience of Traffic Management (TM1, TM2 and T7).
• A working knowledge of the Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works.
• An understanding of quality assurance processes.
