Information About Our School
Ingleby Greenhow CE Primary School is situated in the charming village of Ingleby Greenhow. The village is located on the Cleveland way, a long-distance footpath that runs for 109 miles through the North York Moors National Park. It is also located near the site of the Battle of Ingleby Moor, which took place in 1642 during the English Civil War. Built in 1874, our school is inclusive and welcoming where we encourage all to ‘Be kind and honest; others will respect you and treat you fairly’. Proverbs 21:21.
The school’s Christian ethos underpins day-to-day life in school. Pupils know the school’s Christian values and can relate these to British values. They have a respectful and caring attitude towards others who may be different to themselves. They see no reason why anyone would be treated differently.
Our catchment area is predominantly within the village area, however, we do also have families who elect to travel from local towns to access our ‘small school’ benefits. Our demographic is mainly white British, mixed social status and stable families with low mobility. We cater for children aged 3-11 with a cohort of 31 and nursery provision for 4.
Our Pupils
Our pupils are generally well-behaved, polite, confident, happy, engaging and friendly. They have a thirst for knowledge and are not afraid to question and challenge in lessons. At Ingleby Greenhow CE Primary School we take very seriously our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. More recently like most schools, we have had an increasing number of pupils with SEND, who require additional support.
Pupil leadership and inclusion, along with a strong focus on British Values is important at Ingleby, with the following initiatives:
Democracy
Children, parents and staff have many opportunities for their voices to be heard at Ingleby Greenhow CofE VC Primary School. Democracy is central to how we operate.
Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. We encourage pupils to take ownership of not only their school but also of their own learning and progress. This encourages a heightened sense of both personal and social responsibility and is demonstrated on a daily basis by our pupils.
We have a school council whereby all pupils have the opportunity to take part in a ballot in order for members of the school council to be elected. Pupils relish the opportunity to produce a campaign speech and to evidence the skills necessary to make a great school councillor.
Being Part of Britain
As a school, we value and celebrate the diverse heritages of everybody at Ingleby Greenhow CofE VC Primary School. Alongside this, we value and celebrate living in, and being part of Britain. Children also learn about being part of Britain from different perspectives. Two specific examples of when we teach about being part of Britain are:
Geographically: Our rivers, coasts and United Kingdom topics ensure that children have a better understanding of what Britain is, learning more about:
- Its coasts, rivers and mountains
- Where Britain is in relation to the rest of Europe and other countries in the world.
Historically: Key moments in British history are studied in the topics such as the Great Fire of London, Locomotive Travel, Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age and significant historical figures such as Guy Fawkes and Florence Nightingale and British Kings and Queens.
Rewards for Good Behaviour
To encourage and promote good behaviour, attitude, and work, we have devised a reward system which is consistently followed throughout the school. We are committed to praising children’s efforts. We endeavour to praise the children informally, individually, during group work, in front of the whole class and the whole school.
Children are rewarded not only for achievement in curriculum areas, but for behaviour and general adherence to the school or class rules. Rewards are given in the form of small prizes, stickers, and awards and through our weekly Sharing Assemblies.
Our Staffing Team
We have a dedicated, collaborative staff cohort who all go above and beyond to provide the very best experience for all pupils. Our staff have excellent relationships, with a team spirit and willing support to ensure best provision for the pupils.
Currently our experienced Interim Headteacher and Senior Teacher lead the school and undertake all senior leadership responsibilities. The current Senior Leadership team structure is temporary and is on a 3/2 day basis with the senior teacher working 3 days and the Interim Headteacher working 2 days whilst we await out new Headteacher. The new Headteacher will be appointed to work 5 days a week. The post will include a teaching responsibility.
There are 3 classes operating in the morning with KS2 working as 1 class in the afternoon, with teaching shared across part-time teaching staff. There is currently a full-time supply teacher in nursery-Y2 class, covering for a maternity leave until September 2025. There is a further 3 days a week teacher on a one year contract to cover the teaching duties of the Headteacher until we recruit our new Headteacher,. The senior teacher, working 3 days, is our SENDCo subject leader for Maths, PHSCE and RE as well as our DDSL.
Our experienced support staff are integral to the running of our school. The school administrator is experienced and coordinates many of the day-to-day school procedures and processes.
Our Governing Body
Our governing body is supportive and cohesive and helps the Senior Leadership Team to provide continuous improvement and educational enrichment to our school, enhancing educational standards and nurturing community relationships. Read more about our Governing body here. (opens in a new tab)
As a warm, caring and inclusive school, we learn together by valuing friendship and respecting ourselves and each other. Deeply rooted in the Christian values of Compassion, Friendship and Respect, we aim to be responsible citizens who care for the environment and make a positive contribution to our communities. Everyone is inspired to reach their full potential and we are proud that the way we thread our values through every aspect of the school was recognised in our most recent Ofsted
As a Church of England School in partnership with parents and guardians we aim to provide: -
- A community based on Christian values that encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith.
- A happy, warm, and welcoming environment where learning is engaging and everyone can feel safe and secure.
- A caring and sharing school where everyone is valued and there are equal opportunities for all.
- A continually evolving broad and balanced curriculum which offers opportunities for pupils to recognise, develop and share their wide variety of talents and skills.
- A sound preparation of our children for the changing world of today and tomorrow. We have a strong desire for our pupils to leave self-confident and be able to relate and interact with people of all ages, lifestyles, and backgrounds through being a good citizen.
- A school that nurtures strong links between home, parents and carers, local and wider communities and the Church.
Collective Worship
Whole School Worship is held five times a week and generally follow themes that are linked to the schools’ vision and values and include the pattern of the church year. Most importantly, the underpinning desire for our collective worships is that it should be invitational and an experience that is inclusive of those of different faiths, or non-faiths.
We are very proud of our school curriculum. Our Ofsted report from 2022 states that:
‘Leaders have ensured that the curriculum in all subjects starts from the early years. The precise knowledge that leaders intend pupils to learn is clearly identified. As a result, teachers are clear about exactly what to teach and how to teach it. They ensure that every pupil in the mixed-age classes has what they need to make progress. This includes in the early years, where nursery-age children are helped to gain the foundational knowledge that they need for Reception Year.’
Our Christian vision is the foundation of our curriculum and through our curriculum we are provided with opportunities to live out our Christian Values of Compassion, Friendship and Respect.
Our curriculum is designed to provide inspiring and varied experiences for all our children to thrive and who aspire to reach their full potential. Children are motivated to be independent, young leaders who act respectfully and compassionately to others and therefore as a result become responsible, caring citizens in our community.
We follow National Curriculum Guidelines and have designed our own bespoke broad and balanced curriculum to meet the needs of all our learners. Outdoor Learning is very important as our Ofsted 2022 report notes:
‘Teaching staff enhance children’s learning through the creative use of the outside learning environment. Children in early years develop mathematical skills by counting conkers, and older pupils are able to carry out scientific investigations’.
Within Early Years and KS1 we have designed a thematic curriculum taught in a three-year cycle. For KS2 we have designed a four-year rolling programme with subjects being taught in blocks to broaden and deepen pupils’ knowledge of different topic areas. We have high expectations of all our pupils, and we ensure that the implementation of our curriculum is inclusive to all, allowing every child to flourish. Skilful planning provides opportunities for the National Curriculum subjects to be taught in a cross curricular way where appropriate, with skills and knowledge built on effectively over time.
Read more about our curriculum here. (opens in a new tab)
Relationships with parents, carers and the local community
We have excellent relationships with parents, carers and the local community. FIGS – Friends of Ingleby Greenhow are an active and supportive group engaged in community activities and fundraising. The school regularly joins in with church events and contributes to several charities on a regular basis.
Relationship with LA and Diocese
The school works in strong partnership with the Local Authority for school improvement and we broker a range of LA traded services including the school bursar, the Professional Governance Service, HR, and Health and Safety services. There are good links with the diocese e.g., prayer cards and Bishop Visit.
Wider networks
Relationships with school-to-school partners are in place and we would work with the LA and Diocese to ensure that the successful candidate is introduced to local networks and partnerships to support their work and their development, including sourcing a mentor Headteacher if appropriate.
There are links with Red Kite Teaching School Hub who support our ECT.
SIAMS
Our last SIAMS inspection in 2018, saw us rated as ‘Good’ and can be read here.
‘Ingleby Greenhow is a very inclusive school which prides itself on creating a ‘community based on Christian values’. These values of forgiveness, peace and friendship are central to the life of the school and inform the school’s approach to the social and academic development of all pupils. They are consistently explained through collective worship and RE and pupils talk confidently about how they influence the choices that they make. This results in a high standard of behaviour and pupils are eager to learn’.
OFSTED
Our latest Section *Ofsted report in 2022, confirmed that the school continues to be a good school and can be read here.
We are particularly proud of the extract below which captures not just the rigour of our curriculum but also how we enhance this through the wider curriculum and how our values underpin all of this:
'Leaders have ensured that pupils have access to a wide range of opportunities to better understand the world around them. Pupils’ knowledge of individual subjects is deepened by the trips and extra-curricular activities which are thoughtfully linked to the curriculum. Many pupils develop leadership skills through the positions of responsibility that they hold. Pupils elected to the school council are looking forward to finalising their plans for the Christmas fair. Other pupils are ‘well-being ambassadors’ and caringly support pupils who may be anxious and need someone to talk to.'Our Strengths:
- A supportive parent community with a close knit ‘family’ feel.
- High standards and aspirations.
- Teaching staff enhance children’s learning through the creative use of the outside learning environment.
- A good standard of pupil behaviour.
- Cohesive and supportive relationships between staff and leaders.
- The school’s Christian values of forgiveness, peace and friendship are clearly defined and equip pupils to make positive choices about their attitudes and behaviours.
Areas for development:
- Improving outcomes in writing is our key priority for this academic year.
- Following our interim leadership arrangements there will be a need for a re-establishment of systems, structures and routines appropriate for a permanent, onsite full-time Headteacher.
- Continuing to build on the area for improvement in our most recent Ofsted inspection In a few subjects, including SMSC, pupils struggle to recall the important knowledge that leaders have identified. This is because they have not had sufficient opportunities to return to this information over time. As a result, some pupils have gaps in their knowledge. Leaders should ensure that there is a consistent approach to revisiting key information so that pupils are able to retrieve this knowledge from their long-term memory.
Pupil achievement, attainment and progress:
Due to our cohort sizes, some of our outcomes are suppressed and therefore not in the public domain. Further information on our publicly available date can be found here. We would be happy to share further data with candidates on request.
Budget position
The school currently has financial reserves. Like many schools, the in-year position identifies a reduced carry forward. The new Headteacher will be required to address our in-year deficit.
Further information on our budget can be found here.
Short and Mid-term Priorities
- To continue to ensure a high quality of education, so that all pupils make strong progress from their individual starting points in order to reach their full potential and this is reflected in their attainment at statutory assessments in Year 1 phonics, Key Stage 1 and 2.
- Ensure that progress in writing is accelerated in order to further raise attainment at the end of KS1 and KS2 so that pupils reach their full potential.
- Ensure that all leaders including governors are well equipped to support the school in raising standards and achievement.
- Ensure that excellent standards in safeguarding practices are maintained by continually monitoring and evaluating the systems in place and making improvements where necessary.
- Ensure that in the few subjects, including SMSC that pupils have sufficient opportunities to return to this information over time to plug any gaps in their knowledge and so that pupils are able to retrieve this knowledge from their long-term memory.
Long term Ambitions
Long term ambitions for the next 3-5 years:
- Build school numbers.
- Maintain high standards.
- Build on positive relationships.
Leadership models been explored during 2024-2025 and governors are committed to a teaching Headteacher structure. The current vacancy reflects the Governors’ determination for the school to continue to thrive with far-sighted leadership.
Leaders and staff work with York Diocese to develop a shared understanding of Spirituality and how this can be woven into the school’s provision.
York Diocesan Board of Education supports 123 Church of England schools and academies in the area from the Humber to the Tees. We have a dedicated team of professionals who offer a wide range of expertise and can help schools access further assistance.

North Yorkshire is England's largest county and one of the most rural. The area comprises the Yorkshire Dales (opens in a new tab) and North York Moors (opens in a new tab), three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a stunning coastline around Scarborough and Whitby. There are ruined castles and abbeys, serene gardens, unique breweries, thrilling rides and industrial heritage. The area hosted the phenomenal Tour de France ‘Grand Depart’ in 2014 and has since created the Tour de Yorkshire, an annual event with global recognition. Our success in supporting these events led to Harrogate hosting the UCI Cycling World Championships in 2019.
North Yorkshire has plenty to offer the outdoor enthusiast. From the hard gritstone of Almscliff and Brimham rocks to the limestone of Malham, Gordale and Kilnsey climbing venues are in abundance. The Yorkshire Dales is the premier area for caving and for mountain biking; there are the bridleways of the Dales and North York Moors as well as the renowned trail centre at Dalby Forest. There are a small number of sailing clubs on reservoirs around the county and fantastic surfsport venues and sea kayaking on the east coast.
While the county is rightly known for its wide open spaces, it also incorporates attractive market towns including Pickering and Helmsley, traditional seaside towns, the Spa town of Harrogate and the ancient city of York - the most visited city outside of London. There are a wide range of shopping, leisure and cultural facilities as well as excellent schools, universities, road and rail links, there really is everything to offer you and your family as a place to work, live and enjoy!
Travelling further afield we have convenient connectivity, with close proximity to metropolitan cities of Leeds and Newcastle, with little over two hours commute on the main train line to London.
