THE STAR MULTI ACADEMY TRUST OPPORTUNITIES
I am delighted that you are choosing to find out more about the Sherburn, Tadcaster and Rural (STAR) Multi-Academy Trust.
There has been a strong tradition of collaboration between our 11 partner schools for many years which culminated in the establishment of the STAR Teaching School Alliance in 2016 and then the STAR Multi-Academy Trust (STAR MAT) was ‘born’ in May 2018.
Our Trust is an exciting venture which allows us to strengthen our existing partnerships still further.
We strive to create an inclusive and collaborative Multi-Academy Trust where everyone (children and adults) can flourish, realise their full potential, and strengthen our communities.
We celebrate diversity and inclusivity within our school community and our schools include both community and Church of England schools. There is no one-size-fits-all solution for providing the best education, and although the academies in the STAR Multi-Academy Trust are all within a short driving distance, each has different needs, has different challenges in improving academic outcomes, and has its own unique identity. We uphold and value this identity, celebrating and nurturing similarities and differences of individual ethos and values.
We firmly believe that effective education needs to be focused on a true understanding of the community that the school serves, and the community of the school itself.
If you would like any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best wishes,
Ian Yapp
Chief Education Officer,
The STAR Multi-Academy Trust
We are proud to be one organisation in which we collaborate ‘to create an outstanding education in all of our schools which will enable every young person to flourish and realise their full potential’.
We want all of our 11 schools to retain and celebrate their distinctive identity; it is the strong structure and partnership within our Trust which can enable strong practice to exist in all our schools. We often talk about being ‘stronger together’ through the collaborative, collegiate approach we take.
This is our Trust, we all have ownership of it and share a collective responsibility for all of our schools.
Currently all STAR schools are located in Sherburn, Tadcaster, Selby and the wider environs.
‘We are one friendly team, who create exciting and safe learning opportunities that grow, inspire and nurture the unique child.’
As a small rural village primary school, Appleton Roebuck Primary is host to 106 children on roll.
We teach in year groups or where mixed year groups are necessary, in a way that best allows for pupils to learn from one-another, collaborate and make strong progress. The Junior Leadership Team, together with the whole school community, reviewed the school ethos, aims and values at the beginning of September 2022. They created 26 affirmations known as the A-Z of Appleton Roebuck. These affirmations define how we treat ourselves and each other.

OUR TRUST ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE
It is a model of close partnership; our Trust has been successful because it has been founded on a group of schools with both a tight geographic footprint and most vitally many years of working together through shared vision, values and culture. We have developed many shared approaches including with regard curriculum planning, teaching and learning and opportunities to share specialist roles across more than one school. The Trust also provides appropriate levels of quality assurance, challenge and where necessary support within the partnership; we do this building on strong existing and well-established relationships.
Our Central Team provide support and challenge through effective governance and accountability at local level with Local Governing Bodies which are linked through to the Board of Trustees through a Scheme of Delegation. At all levels there are highly evolved and consulted planners, guidance, advice and support.
Our formal partnership has already been able to achieve ‘better value’ and financial stability, by having more efficient central and shared services and through the partnership to focus more resources on teaching, learning and student support. As a Trust of over 4400 students, 660 staff and 11 schools, we have access to significant School Condition Allocation (SCA), which enables us to access significant capital funding to invest in improvements to our school estate.
North Yorkshire is England's largest county and one of the most rural. The area comprises the Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Pennines and a stunning coastline around Scarborough and Whitby. The area hosted the phenomenal Tour de France in 2014, and due to its success has created the Tour de Yorkshire with global recognition. There are ruined castles and abbeys, serene gardens, unique breweries, thrilling rides and industrial heritage. Something for everyone!
North Yorkshire has plenty to offer the outdoor enthusiast. From the hard gritstone of Almscliff and Brimham rocks to the limestone of Malham, Gordale and Kilnsey climbing venues are in abundance. The Yorkshire Dales is the premier area for caving and for mountain biking; there are the bridleways of the Dales and North York Moors as well as the renowned trail centre at Dalby Forest.
While the county is rightly known for its wide open spaces, it also incorporates attractive market towns including Pickering and Helmsley, traditional seaside towns, the Spa town of Harrogate and the ancient city of York - the most visited city outside of London. There are a wide range of shopping, leisure and cultural facilities as well as excellent schools, universities, road and rail links, there really is everything to offer you and your family as a place to work, live and enjoy!
Travelling further afield we have convenient connectivity, with close proximity to metropolitan cities of Leeds and Newcastle, with little over two hours commute on the main train line to London.
