Skilled Operative with LGV

 

Salary: From £30,273 per year (Grade 4)

At NY Highways, we are continuing to grow, and with the help of our people, we are the highways services and maintenance provider of choice to both private and public sector clients across North Yorkshire and neighbouring areas.

We are looking for someone with experience in the highway or construction industry to join our Selby Depot as a Highways Skilled Operative with LGV.

The Selby team are proud to offer their services to the largest county in the UK and are dedicated to contributing to our local community and the preservation of the natural beauty and history of the area.

The team recently completed several projects across the local area including work on the access road leading into the site of the new SEND school in Osgodby, Selby on behalf of the Department for Education and North Yorkshire Council. Other projects have included resurfacing works, drainage improvements and drain replacements.  We have other projects in the pipeline that you can be involved in, that will see vast improvements made across Selby and the surrounding areas.

As a Highways Skilled Operative with LGV, you will:

Work closely with the Ganger to carry out a wide range of skilled tasks including kerbing, drainage installation, patching, ironwork renewal, street furniture installation, and more. You'll also tackle general maintenance duties like site upkeep, traffic management, and roadside verge maintenance and operate specialist highways plant equipment and tools to complete maintenance and repair work.

This role involves participation in an out-of-hours call-out rota for emergencies and winter maintenance activities.

 

To be successful in the role, you will have some of the following skills and experience:

·       Banksman

·       Manual Handling

·       Abrasive wheels

·       Emergency First Aid

·       Safe Dig

·       Traffic Management TM1 and TM2

·       Relevant Level 2 qualification in highway maintenance, or relevant work experience

·       Hold a HGV Driving License

·       City and Guilds Winter 6159 certification for driving and operating gritters or, willingness to undertake training once in post.

Apprentice Highways Operative
Apprentice Highways Operative

 

Location: Thirsk (NY Highways Area 2)

Salary: £12.21 per hour

Contract: Fixed-term for 2 years

Hours: Approximately 40 hours per week, working Monday to Sunday, usually over 5 days

Qualification: Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative - Apprenticeship (Level 2)

This opportunity is a 24-month fixed-term contract with potential progression into a Highways Operative role after successful completion of the Apprenticeship.

You will work on a wide range of duties and experience various environments and conditions across North Yorkshire, from towns and villages to rural countryside. You will join a dedicated and supportive team, working and learning from some of our most experienced colleagues. We are looking for someone with good communication skills, a willingness to tackle various tasks, and the motivation to learn and grow professionally.

 

 

We are looking for someone who can:

  • Work safely within NY Highways policy and legislation
  • Follow instructions from the team supervisor or lead
  • Carry out various tasks while wearing personal protective equipment
  • Fully attend and engage with your college course and workplace training
  • Apply classroom theory practically in the work environment

 

Throughout your apprenticeship you will learn to carry out repairs and improvements safely and efficiently to highways infrastructure, which include:

  • Modular paving, kerb installation, bituminous macadam laying, concreting, pipe laying, landscaping, and drainage repairs
  • Traffic management and seasonal maintenance activities

 

You must by over the age of 16, and have GCSE grades 9*- 4 (A-C) in English and Maths. If not, you must achieve this level before the end-point assessment.  It would be desirable for you to have attained or be working towards obtaining a full UK Driving Licence,

 

An Apprenticeship with NY Highways

Supervisor

There will be times when you will be required to work in other areas to support a variety of projects.

As a Supervisor:

You will be responsible for the strategic oversight of highways operational activities, including quality, environmental and safety obligations. Your excellent communication skills will allow you to supervise all highways and construction works effectively whilst overseeing your team of operatives, subcontractors, Supervisors and Depot Supervisors.

Collaborating closely with the Senior Supervisor, you will focus on the efficient delivery of works packages and the running of the depot while prioritising the health and safety for all employees.  This involves the planning and programming of materials, plant, and labour daily, including the assessment of traffic management to ensure works align to streetworks requirements.

Your ability to organise and plan will allow you to maintain site and financial records and undertake regular projections of spend, performance and progress against agreed works programmes effectively.  You will contribute to the development of your team by coaching and acting as a mentor to ensure everyone has the skillset and experience needed to progress in their own roles.

 

To be successful in the role, you will have some of the following skills and experience:

·       Have significant experience in highway / construction related activities at Ganger level or equivalent and a demonstrable proven track record.

·       Have experience in Traffic Management TM1, TM2 and T7.

·       Hold or be willing to undertake training for Winter 6159 Supervisor Unit 621.

·       Have working knowledge of The Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works.

·       Have a good understanding of quality assurance processes.

·       Have a working knowledge and experience of implementing relevant health and safety legislation.

·       Be a good communicator, with the ability to motivate others, work in a team and problem solve

As a Trainee Supervisor

You will visit sites before work starts, discussing traffic management requirements for each job, ensure Daily Briefings to all operatives and subcontractors are carried out and see that works are completed on time and to specification.

From ensuring safe working methods are followed to promoting positive morale no two days are the same as you help lead teams providing highway services to keep North Yorkshire moving. This role offers the opportunity to learn and develop all of the skills required to successfully complete highway maintenance activities.

 

To be successful in the role, you will have some of the following skills and experience:

·       Have significant experience in highway / construction related activities at Ganger level or equivalent and a demonstrable proven track record of project delivery and/managing others.

·       Good communication skills with the ability to work well in a team environment

·       Commitment to partnering and to a high-quality service

·       Awareness of company operating and safety procedures

·       Competent IT skills and computer literacy using MS Office / Outlook / Project, financial systems (Sage or similar) and operational systems (Symology or similar)

·       You must have a full UK drivers’ licence with the ability to travel around the county

Highly Skilled Craftsperson

Salary: From £32,433 per year (Grade 5)

Are you looking for a challenging and varied role in highways maintenance?  Due to continued growth, NY Highways are looking to welcome a Highly Skilled Craftsperson to support our operations from our Area 2 Thirsk Depot.

 

“Bringing innovative solutions to the roads of North Yorkshire and beyond”

NY Highways provides road maintenance and construction across North Yorkshire’s network of all almost 5800 miles.  We operate in close partnership with North Yorkshire Council as well as being the provider of choice for private clients both in North Yorkshire and the neighbouring areas.

We are looking for a Highly Skilled Craftsperson who has expertise in Stonemasonry, Bricklaying, Resurfacing or Roadmarking along with experience in other aspects of highway construction to join our Thirsk depot. With a busy pipeline of projects to be involved with straight away, you will be part of the team making improvements across Thirsk and the surrounding areas.

 

As a Craftsperson:

You will play a crucial role in delivering highway projects across North Yorkshire, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget. Your work will encompass a variety of tasks, including kerb lines, drainage systems, footways, carriageways, and modular paving. A significant part of your job will involve operating various equipment necessary for routine, cyclical, and new build projects, all while adhering to Health and Safety standards.

In addition, you’ll be responsible for general upkeep and repair tasks such as inlay/contour patching and renewing ironworks. You'll also ensure the proper installation and maintenance of street furniture and other highway structures.

This is a physically active role, requiring you to work outdoors in all weathers, therefore a reasonable level of fitness is required. You will be provided with full Personal Protective Equipment including outdoor clothing.

This is an exciting opportunity to take on larger and more complex projects in your area of expertise while using specialised highways plant equipment and tools for maintenance and repair work.

To be successful in this role you will…

As NY Highways goes from strength to strength, we are looking for experienced and enthusiastic Skilled Operatives to join our team based in Thirsk.  Skilled Operatives deliver a wide variety of routine or cyclical works, which can include kerbing, paving and resurfacing footways and carriageways in accordance with our local community’s needs.

 

As a Skilled Operative you will…

Work as part of a team, you will understand and carry out all work to the highest standard whilst following Safety, Health and Environmental policies and risk assessments.  This will involve using a range of power tools and equipment and working with different NY Highways employees.

This is the ideal role if you already have similar experience in a Highways maintenance role and looking to join a progressive and forward-looking business that offers training and the opportunity progress in your career.

Looking for a challenging and varied role in highways maintenance? Due to continued growth, NY Highways are looking to welcome a Highways Operative, with LGV licence, to support our operations from our depots at Thirsk.

In this role, you'll undertake a variety of tasks such as kerbing, paving, and resurfacing footways and carriageways to meet the needs of our community in scenic North Yorkshire.

Working collaboratively, you'll ensure all tasks are executed to the highest standards while adhering to Safety, Health, and Environmental protocols and risk assessments. You will be able to demonstrate the ability to use a range of power tools and equipment, and successfully collaborate with various NY Highways team members.

As part of your responsibilities, you'll need to be prepared to handle emergencies and respond to callouts both during and outside of regular hours, according to a rotating schedule. Additionally, you'll be expected to perform winter maintenance tasks, with necessary training provided as needed.

 

Essential Qualifications

·       Category C Drivers Licence, with no current or historical driving disqualifications

·       Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)

In this varied role, you'll be responsible for a wide range of skilled tasks including kerbing, drainage installation, patching, ironwork renewal, street furniture installation, and more. You'll also tackle general maintenance duties like site upkeep, traffic management, and roadside verge maintenance.

With opportunities to work on diverse maintenance projects, you'll be involved in tasks such as concrete work, paving, asphalt laying, fence repair, sign erecting, and vegetation management.

Working as part of a dedicated team, you'll ensure all work is completed to the highest standard while adhering to Safety, Health, and Environmental policies.  As a TSCO...

You will use apply your knowledge and experience in the highway sector to carry out basic safety, quality and environmental audits and risk assessments.  Whilst carrying out or supervising the efficient running of operational activities on site and ensuring safety and traffic management is set out correctly, you’ll also be speaking directly to clients and members of the public so the ability to communicate effectively with the people around you (from clients to workforce and subcontractors) will be key to the success this position.

 

With the majority of your time spent visiting site and managing site activity it’s important to have valid UK Driving Licence and Emergency First Aid.

Electrician

About the Role:

We’re seeking an experienced and motivated Electrician to join our Property Services team at North Yorkshire Highways. This is a varied and rewarding role involving a mix of capital projects and responsive maintenance work across a range of commercial properties. From fault-finding to full installations, you’ll play a key role in keeping essential buildings safe and operational.

You will be based from one of our NYH Depots, Northallerton, Thirsk, Brompton on Swale, Scarborough, Kirby Misperton, Skipton, Boroughbridge, with travel across across North Yorkshire.  You’ll work both independently and as part of a skilled team, delivering high-quality electrical services related to property maintenance and renovations, ensuring compliance with all health, safety, and building regulations. You’ll be expected to work flexibly across the county and take part in our out-of-hours call-out rota to respond to emergency repairs.

As an Electrician you will:

·         Carry out a full range of electrical work, including installation, testing, fault diagnosis, and repairs, in accordance with work orders and specifications.

·         Work on a variety of tasks across different work programmes, including emergency repairs, planned maintenance, and capital projects.
Liaise with supervisors, stakeholders, and team members to complete jobs effectively and escalate any unresolved matters.

·         Contribute to the planning and safety documentation required for each project, including risk assessments and method statements.

·         Supervise and train apprentices or junior staff members, ensuring high-quality work and compliance with health and safety practices.

·         Ensure that all work complies with relevant legislation, building codes, and internal processes and report on progress using handheld devices.

·         Take part in the on-call rota for emergency out-of-hours repairs.

 

To be successful in this role you will have…

·            NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Electrical Installation

·            Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Gold Card

·            18th Edition Wiring Regulations qualification

·            2391 Inspection & Testing (or equivalent testing qualification)

·            Full UK Driving Licence

·            Strong experience across installation, maintenance, and fault-finding in commercial properties

·            Sound knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and safe systems of work

·            The ability to work as part of a team and independently, using initiative when required

·            Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

·            The ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

·            The flexibility to work as part of an on-call rota and travel across the county

·            Enhanced DBS check (Children’s Barred List)

Construction Supervisor

Role: Construction Supervisor

About the Role:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Construction Supervisor to join our Property Services team at North Yorkshire Highways. This is a rewarding and hands-on leadership role, overseeing a mix of capital projects and responsive maintenance work across various commercial and public sector properties.

 

In this role, you will work both independently and as part of a skilled team to manage and supervise the day-to-day delivery of building maintenance and capital works programs across North Yorkshire Council property estate. The Construction Supervisor will ensure operational efficiency, compliance with health and safety regulations, and high standards of workmanship during the execution of planned and reactive construction activities.

 

Your responsibilities will include line management of operational staff and subcontractors, overseeing health and safety on-site, managing resources, and contributing to continuous service improvement.

 

As this is a county-wide role, flexibility and a proactive approach are essential. You will also participate in an out-of-hours call-out rota, assisting with emergency repairs and ensuring continuity of service.

 

As Supervisor you will…

  • Oversee and coordinate day-to-day construction and highways maintenance work, ensuring safe systems of work, job quality, and compliance with specifications and deadlines.
  • Ensure all works comply with statutory safety obligations and Health and Safety policies, including site inductions, risk assessments, and regular inspections.
  • Manage and deliver projects to agreed timescales and budgets. Prepare site documentation, liaise with contractors, and ensure resource availability (labour, plant, materials).
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to communicate progress, resolve issues, and attend Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) meetings.
  • Line manage operatives, oversee performance and conduct appraisals, and provide guidance, mentoring, and development opportunities.
  • Plan works, coordinate teams and logistics, and monitor financial performance, ensuring works are delivered efficiently.
  • Monitor site progress and ensure accurate, timely documentation including valuations, site records, and system updates for audit and compliance.
  • Assess traffic management needs and ensure compliance with legal requirements related to street works and public safety.
  • Participate in the out-of-hours call-out rota to manage urgent repairs and ensure service continuity.
  • Lead daily briefings, foster a positive team culture, and promote NY Highways' values and behaviours.

Highways Skilled Operative

Salary: From £28,254 per year (Grade 3)

Contract: Permanent, Full-time, 40 hours a week

Locations:  Selby, North Yorkshire

We are looking for someone with experience in the highway or construction industry to join our Selby Depot as a Skilled Operative. The Selby team are proud to offer their services to the largest county in the UK and are dedicated to contributing to our local community and the preservation of the area.

 

Projects the team have completed include improvement works on New Lane, including wider pathways new paving and crossing points, allowing residents and visitors, safer pedestrianised access to the new businesses along the street. The Yorkstone paving and conservation kerbs has enhanced the visual aspects of the area. There are other projects in the pipeline, that you can be involved in that will see vast improvements made across Selby and the surrounding areas.

As a Skilled Operative

You'll be responsible for a wide range of skilled tasks including kerbing, drainage installation, patching, ironwork renewal, street furniture installation, and more. You'll also tackle general maintenance duties like site upkeep, traffic management, and roadside verge maintenance.

With opportunities to work on diverse maintenance projects, you'll be involved in tasks such as concrete work, paving, asphalt laying, fence repair, sign erecting, and vegetation management.

Good communication skills are essential for collaborating effectively with our NY Highways team, and flexibility is key as some out-of-hours work is required.
