Literacy Specialist (Secondment)

Yorkshire Endeavour Academy Trust are one of the founding 34 hubs nationally to be a designated ‘English Hub’, a DfE funded program, which aims for all children to achieve the best possible outcomes in early reading. We support schools in developing early language, systematic synthetic phonics provision and a love of reading amongst primary pupils, with a particular focus upon EYFS and KS1.

The Literacy Specialist Role

Yorkshire Endeavour English Hub is seeking to recruit two outstanding primary teachers to work as a Literacy Specialists on a secondment basis. You will undergo training through the English Hub Programme and DfE, observing the best practice in Literacy nationally, to develop your expertise and offer support to schools in our region (North Yorkshire Coast, Hambleton, Ryedale, East Riding and York City).
We are looking for a passionate and experienced EYFS/KS1 Teacher who has an excellent knowledge of Early Reading and Phonics. You will need to have experience taking a leading role in their phase/ school and have a proven track record of improving early reading outcomes.

Role duties:

  • Support partner school leaders to implement the ‘Challenge Checklist’ (a list of DfE approved objectives for Early Reading) across a specified number days next academic year.
  • Coach leaders and teachers within their designated Partner Schools to improve quality of SSP and Early Reading teaching.
  • Track the schools progress in early reading through rigorous data analysis, supporting leaders to implement interventions and close gaps.
  • Ensure partner school Reading Leaders submit half-termly progress data to the hub.
  • Produce an ‘Action Plan’ report after each visit, detailing measurable, specific actions for implementation.
  • Ensure that their own practice is outstanding by aiming for at least 90% in the Phonics Screening Check in their home school.

Our Hub Lead will ensure you are fully supported by:

  • Providing professional development and training from the DfE, SSP providers, English Hubs network and other external specialists.
  • Supporting LS’s on joint Partner School visits.
  • Meeting frequently with the LS team to reaffirm core messages, deliver CPD and support with analysing school data.
  • Providing you with systems and key documentation to ensure consistency across all LS reporting and support.
  • Providing you with opportunities to observe best practice SSP in other schools.
  • Ensuring communication lines are always open at anytime.
  • Ensuring you receive on-going relevant training required to carry out the role.

Your Home School

Your current school need to ensure that it has the capacity, expertise and desire to allow the Literacy Specialist to be released to take part in school-to-school support for the duration of the academic year (September 1st 2025 - July 20th 2026).

Time commitment

The Literacy Specialist will be seconded from their home school for approximately a minimum of 19 days as detailed below.

Final summer half term 2025:

  • 2 Training Days (£350 per day)

September 1st 2025 - July 20th 2026:

  • 2 Training Days (£350 per day)
  • 3 Literacy Specialist Development Days (£350 per day) Between *12-32 days to support Partner Schools, with 0.2 PPA time provided by the home school in addition for each release day.
*Home school to specify the maximum number of Partner School days, in addition to the training above, the potential LS is able to complete.

Funding:

  • For each day working as a Literacy Specialist with a partner school, the releasing school will be funded £420 (£350 day release rate plus 0.2 PPA time £70)
  • Training days are paid at £350 per day released.

Phonics Lesson Observation & Interview

If shortlisted, the first stage of interview will involve an observation of the applicant teaching a phonics lesson in their current school during the first 2-3 weeks back of Summer 1 half term. We will then shortlist again and invite successful applicants to interview during the week commencing 12th May. Specific dates to be agreed between the school at Hub.
