Welcome

Welcome and thank you for your interest in learning more about City of York Council and our Assistant Director of Housing role.

Lead one of local government's most important housing improvement and transformation agendas whilst shaping the future of housing in one of the UK's most historic and ambitious cities.

This is a pivotal and exciting opportunity for an inspiring leader to help shape York's future prosperity and deliver lasting benefits for our residents, businesses and communities.

As Director of City Development, I am passionate about York, a progressive, inclusive and sustainable city that places the wellbeing of its residents at the heart of everything it does, whilst protecting the heritage, character and culture of this world-famous city with UNESCO status.

York has much to be proud of. It is one of the most productive cities in the North, with high levels of employment, above-average wages, an outstanding education system and a highly skilled workforce. It is also widely recognised as a wonderful place to live, work, study and visit.

The city is entering an exciting period of transformation. The Council is leading the development of the new Local Plan (York 2045), working closely with the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, developers and partners to unlock significant opportunities for growth.

Housing is central to that future. From delivering new homes and preventing homelessness to maintaining housing stock and supporting thriving neighbourhoods, the service touches the lives of thousands of residents every day.

This is a pivotal time to join us. Following our first inspection by the Regulator of Social Housing, City of York Council achieved a C2 consumer grading. I am proud of the professionalism, commitment and self-awareness demonstrated by our teams throughout that process. While the inspection identified areas for improvement, it also recognised many strengths across our housing services. We have a clear improvement plan in place and are determined to achieve a C1 grading at future inspections. This role will be instrumental in leading that journey and ensuring tenants remain at the heart of everything we do.

We are looking for a leader who can strengthen delivery, drive improvement and help reconnect housing with the council's wider ambitions for growth, regeneration and thriving communities. You will join a strong corporate leadership team and play a key role in shaping services that make a tangible difference to residents' lives.

We're not looking for someone to maintain the status quo; we're looking for a leader who will help us reshape services, strengthen delivery and lead the next phase of improvement.

You will find a role that offers both professional challenge and genuine influence. York is large enough to provide the complexity, scale and ambition that make local government leadership rewarding, yet small enough to enable you to make decisions, build relationships and see the impact of your work. This high-profile role offers an outstanding opportunity to make a significant difference while further developing your career.

Our residents, businesses and communities work hard for this city and inspire each other to be welcoming, ambitious and successful. If you are excited by the opportunity to contribute to the next phase of York's journey, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Following an initial conversation with our recruitment partners, The Resourcing Solution, I would be pleased to discuss the role in more detail with those who would like to learn more.
