Whitby School and Sixth Form
Teacher of Science
A great fixed-term opportunity—perfect for ECTs seeking solid experience or for experienced teachers settling into the area.
About Us
Whitby School began as a new school in September 2024; this was an exciting development for the Whitby community. Our school is a positive, warm, and welcoming school where pupils aim to do their very best and take pride in their achievements. By constantly challenging our pupils to excel, we nurture aspirations and cultivate a lifelong love of learning in our young people.
Our four key values - Ambition, Courage, Character, and Endeavour - are the pillars of everything we do. Whitby School is proud to hold the future within its walls. Every lesson, every conversation, every act of kindness helps shape the leaders, thinkers, and citizens of tomorrow.
Our motto, Ad finem terrae - To the ends of the earth - reminds us that the world is wide, full of opportunity, and waiting to be explored. We want our children to aim for exciting, far-reaching goals, knowing that their journey can take them anywhere.
We are looking for colleagues who will provide a creative, safe, and caring environment where every child is known and cared for as an individual. In this climate, every young person can thrive as they develop in personality, character and intellect and become a highly successful learner and individual.
You can find out further information on our website.
The Science Department
The department is led by a Head of Science, supported by a second in Science and by colleagues who have additional responsibility within the learning area. There are specialists in all disciplines, and two excellent technicians who are the backbone of our department.
The Science department staff are passionate about the delivery of their ambitious and engaging lessons. Our science curriculum fuels curiosity and promotes independence and facilitates pupil understanding of the uses and implications of science, today and for the future. Practical work is a vital part of our curriculum; it brings the subject alive and fuels the passion of our children who know thrive on hands-on learning.
We deliver a bespoke curriculum, and pupils are entered for AQA Triple or Combined Science at GCSE. All three sciences are offered at A-level. Each year, we send students to top universities to study science-related degrees.
Our Opportunity
The successful candidate will be a committed and creative practitioner, capable of effective and enthusiastic teaching and learning.
You would join a department which is staffed with specialists who are enjoying some of the best outcomes for students whilst continuing to develop an exciting and engaging curriculum offer for pupils. A key focus for the department is to build upon recent successes and, as a new colleague, you would be working closely with a team who can support, develop and challenge you.
We are looking for a teacher who:
- Is passionate about teaching science and has a creative and flexible approach for all key stages.
- Will model best practice teaching and learning across the department and support the development of quality teaching in the department.
- Will support, challenge and engage a diverse cohort of students, enriching their learning experience, maximising their potential and raising attainment.
- Is willing to engage in CPD.
A Chemistry specialism may be preferred but is not essential.
What we offer:
- We ensure that new members of staff receive a comprehensive induction programme.
- Staff development is a priority – we have collaborative partners within the Wonder Learning Trust and with other coastal schools.
- We subscribe to the National College through which all staff have access to a wide range of online learning.
- A visible and supportive SLT allowing staff to get on with teaching pupils who thrive within our climate for learning.
We encourage applications from candidates who have a passion for supporting pupils in their education with individual needs and who wish to work in a setting which offers rewards and challenges, where no two days are the same.
