West Cliff Primary School

West Cliff Primary School is a warm and friendly community school that provides education from children aged 2-11. It currently has around 200 children on roll, divided into 8 classes (one for each year group). We also have the Rockpool, which is our Targeted Mainstream Provision for children with high level social, emotional and mental health needs. The school mainly takes children from the west side and the centre of Whitby but is accessible from all parts of the town.

We pride ourselves on providing a warm and welcoming environment for children and adults alike, and we strive to provide the very best standard of education possible for our children. The six principles of nurture run through our school.

We are a Beach School as we believe that the beach is a fantastic resource that can be used, both to learn and have fun on. We are located a short walk from the beach, and you can even see the sea from our upper-floor classrooms!

SEND Support at West Cliff

At West Cliff Primary School we do believe that the purpose and the goals of education are the same for every child. We aim to ensure that the learning needs of all children are identified and met. We aim to make the path forward as smooth as possible for all children.

From time to time, however, some children need extra help with their schoolwork. Such help may only be needed in certain areas or for a short time, and, whenever possible, we provide this support in class with extra assistance from a teaching assistant and if needed, adapted schoolwork.

Pupils that need further support will spend time in our “Rockpool” - Targeted Mainstream Provision (TMP) for children with an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) for the primary need of Social, Emotional and Mental Health.

The provision for each child is tailored to their individual needs, with academic input, work on their EHCP targets, and addressing the gaps in their Boxall profile. Each bespoke timetable created by senior staff will ensure that gaps in each child’s development will be reduced and that their strengths and abilities are nurtured and allowed to flourish within a small, safe environment.

We support children in moving between the Rockpool and the relevant mainstream class, so that our children can develop friendships with their peers and gradually increase the time spent with their year group cohort.

About you

We are looking for a special type of teacher to support our children. We want someone who has the passion and patience needed to provide a calm, nurturing and structured environment so that our children feel safe and supported.

Experience of working with children with high level special educational needs, particularly in relation to social, emotional and mental health, would be highly beneficial but training in restorative practice, de-escalation, nurture approaches, and physical intervention will be provided.

The successful candidate will need to be flexible and resilient and have excellent communication skills enabling them to build positive relationships with pupils and work effectively with a team of support staff.

We would strongly encourage applicants to arrange to either visit or speak to the school before applying to gain a fuller picture of the challenges and rewards offered by this post.

(We can accommodate ECT’s dependent on SEND experience)

We can offer you:

  • Delightful children who respond to patience and care
  • A staff culture which allows new members to thrive and develop
  • Professional development opportunities linked to nurture and SEND (perhaps for those wishing to develop into the role of SENDCo)
