The school serves a mixed rural and semi-urban catchment area, drawing pupils from Brompton itself as well as surrounding villages and new housing developments. The area benefits from good road connectivity to Northallerton and nearby towns, and is well served by local amenities including parks, shops, and community facilities. This combination of established and expanding residential areas ensures a diverse school community with strong links to the local environment.
Our Pupils
The pupils ages at Brompton Community Primary School and Nursery range from 3 to 11. Our pupils are widely recognised for their positive attitudes and strong sense of belonging. According to recent OFSTED reports, they demonstrate resilience, respect, and a readiness to contribute actively within the school and the wider community. The inclusive ethos of the school ensures that all pupils, including those with SEND, are supported to achieve their potential and feel valued as individuals. Pupils are noted for their high standards of behaviour, showing mutual respect towards staff and peers, and for their engagement in a creative, skills-based curriculum that encourages curiosity and academic progress.
DfE data typically highlights the school’s commitment to pupil well-being and personal development, resulting in high levels of attendance and participation in extracurricular activities. Pupils are described as enthusiastic learners who embrace opportunities for growth, both academically and personally, and who benefit from a supportive environment that nurtures independence and responsibility. This collective approach helps foster a vibrant school community where pupils are prepared to excel and contribute meaningfully to society.
Ofsted recognised January 2024: Pupils are kind, thoughtful, articulate and independent thinkers. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are supported effectively in class. Teachers use the pupil support plans to design their activities and ensure inclusion.
Our Staffing Team
We benefit from an experienced team of staff at Brompton Primary. Leadership at the school has focused on cultivating a staff culture that encourages professional development and innovation. As Headteacher you will be supported by a talented and committed senior leadership team.
The Senior Leadership team is made up of the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher (on Maternity Leave until Sept 2026). Together, they form a senior team with a great deal of drive and potential, ready to benefit from the support, mentoring and direction of an experienced and inspiring Headteacher.
The Deputy Headteacher brings strong expertise in curriculum development and teaching and learning. They are currently undertaking the NPQH qualification. We are looking for a Headteacher who can offer coaching and guidance, in order that, in the future, they can take on broader responsibilities and to contribute significantly to the school’s direction.
Our Assistant Headteacher brings energy, enthusiasm and a strong commitment to the school’s success. They are an effective manager who ensures the smooth running of key areas of school life and is keen to continue growing their leadership skills. Our current Headteacher is responsible for Safeguarding Personal development and Behaviour and Attitudes with an overview of other aspects.

Our Governing Body
We have the benefit of an experienced, engaged and involved Governing body that works hard to support the school. They meet regularly to discuss the school’s strategic direction and make important decisions that are in the best interest for everyone. Setting strategic aims, overseeing budgets and finances, and ensuring standards of education are met whilst holding the headteacher accountable
At Brompton Community Primary School, our vision is shaped by the concept of “Legacy”, the driving force that turns our aspirations into meaningful action. Legacy reflects our belief that what we do today creates the foundations on which our children build their futures. It guides our curriculum, our ethos and our shared commitment to ensuring every child flourishes.
Rooted in the school motto, “Happiness Through Learning,” our vision encourages every member of the community to be the very best they can be. We aim to provide an environment that is warm, secure and stimulating, where children feel safe, valued and motivated to explore and achieve.
We nurture qualities that help pupils thrive both now and in later life: self‑respect, respect for others, independence, responsibility and pride in personal achievement. Our creative, skills‑based curriculum is designed to meet a wide range of needs and to recognise and build upon each child’s individual strengths.
At the heart of our vision sits a deep commitment to health, wellbeing and personal development. We strive to support children in becoming confident, resilient and compassionate individuals who contribute positively to their community and carry the values of Brompton with them long after they leave.
This is the legacy we create together. One rooted in happiness, learning and lifelong growth.
Curriculum Intent:
Brompton Community Primary School is commended for its inclusive and creative curriculum, as evidenced by our most recent OFSTED reports and details shared on the school website. The curriculum is designed to be skills-based, aiming to meet the needs of all pupils and foster academic progress across a range of abilities. Strengths include the school’s commitment to nurturing individual achievements, building responsible learners, and ensuring all pupils feel valued and safe within a welcoming environment. However, there remain areas for development, specifically the need to embed greater consistency in curriculum delivery and to ensure that pupils with SEND receive tailored support to access learning effectively.
Curriculum Implementation:
The school’s approach to curriculum implementation is underpinned by a culture of high expectations and strong leadership, which has been consistently recognised by OFSTED. Relationships between staff and pupils are positive, contributing to high standards of behaviour and mutual respect. Nevertheless, recent evaluations highlight the importance of refining practice to ensure that the curriculum is enacted with consistency across all subjects and phases. This includes supporting staff with professional development and fostering innovation in classroom practice to drive improvement further. We are looking for a Headteacher who will build on these strengths while guiding the school through its next stage of development.
Assessment Approach:
Assessment at Brompton Community Primary School is used to inform teaching and address gaps in knowledge. OFSTED notes ongoing efforts to refine assessment practices so that they precisely inform teaching decisions and support pupil progress. The leadership is encouraged to continue this work, ensuring that assessment is always purposeful and directly linked to addressing individual learning needs.
Reading Strategy and Early Literacy:
Our school places a strong emphasis on early literacy, with a particular focus on developing pupils’ reading skills from the outset. The curriculum is structured to support early reading, and staff are committed to fostering a love of reading and strengthening foundational literacy skills. This approach is reflected in pupils’ resilience and readiness to engage positively with their learning and the wider community.
Ofsted recognised January 2024 - Reading is a real strength in the school. Children are introduced to phonics as soon as they start in Nursery Year.

SEND and Inclusion
Brompton Community Primary School serves a diverse cohort, with the proportion of pupils identified as having Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) broadly in line with national averages. The school also supports a number of vulnerable pupils. The school’s SEND population has a mix of speech, language and communication difficulties, moderate learning needs and some pupils requiring more specialist support. However, there is an increasing number of pupils with very complex needs.
Staff demonstrate a strong commitment to tailoring provision, enabling SEND and vulnerable pupils to access learning effectively within a creative, skills-based curriculum. Positive relationships and a culture of mutual respect underpin high standards of behaviour. However, pressures persist in maintaining consistency of support across year groups, particularly as national policy changes and funding constraints continue to impact resources. There is also an ongoing challenge to embed adaptive teaching, especially for pupils with complex needs.
The next Headteacher will need to lead a committed staff team in meeting the needs of a diverse and increasingly complex SEND cohort. They will be responsible for strengthening consistency of support across year groups, embedding effective adaptive teaching, and ensuring vulnerable pupils continue to access high‑quality provision despite funding pressures. This means we will be looking for strong, inclusive leadership, balancing strategic oversight with practical support for staff and families. We also want our next Headteacher to be able to maintain the school’s positive culture and high expectations.
Ofsted recognised January 2024 - Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are supported effectively in class. Teachers use the pupil support plans to design their activities and ensure inclusion. The school works well with external partners to bring in additional support and training for staff. This helps staff to understand and support more-complex needs.
Wellbeing of Staff and Pupils
Brompton Community Primary School excels in creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, ensuring pupils feel valued and safe. Its commitment to a creative, skills-based curriculum supports diverse learning needs and fosters academic progress across all abilities. Ofsted also recognises the positive relationships between staff and pupils, which contribute to high standards of behaviour and mutual respect throughout the school. Moreover, the focus on health, well-being, and personal development is reflected in pupils’ resilience and readiness to contribute positively to their community.
Leadership and management are praised for their clarity of vision and effective strategies, resulting in continued improvement and a culture of high expectations. The school’s dedication to nurturing individual achievements and building responsible, independent learners further enhances its reputation as a vibrant and supportive educational environment.
Ofsted recognised January 2024 - The school leaders, including the governing body, help ensure that staff’s workload is manageable. Staff feel that they are cared for and that leaders are approachable if they have any concerns or need support. The school culture is understood by staff and they, too, feel part of the team
Relationships with parents, carers and the local community
The school has established positive relationships with parents, supported by strong communication and a wide range of engagement opportunities including PTFA events, performances and charity work. Parents express confidence in school leadership and recognise the inclusive and safe culture.
However further development is possible, particularly in increasing engagement with vulnerable families and addressing attendance challenges through shared approaches. There is also an opportunity for our next Headteacher to rekindle a partnership with the surrounding churches.
Relationship with LA
As a locally maintained school, Brompton Primary School enjoys a strong working relationship with the Local Authority (North Yorkshire Council) and a positive partnership with its School Advisor. As we begin a new chapter with the appointment of our next Headteacher, we are committed to maintaining and further strengthening these valuable relationships.
Wider networks
As well as the Governing Body and local community, Brompton Primary School is committed to the Beacon School partnership member of the Swaledale Alliance, which will provide further support to our next Headteacher.
As a Headteacher of a North Yorkshire LA‑maintained school, you will receive a strong package of professional support. This includes access to the CYPS Education Standards and Inclusion school improvement offer, alongside an extensive range of traded services. You will take part in the Welcome to North Yorkshire induction programme, receive guidance from an experienced mentor Headteacher, and be supported by a named Senior Education Adviser who will help you navigate school improvement and wider services.
Ofsted
Our most recent Ofsted report was in January 2024, which found we continued to be a “Good” school.
The Ofsted Report highlights several key strengths, notably the school's inclusive ethos and welcoming atmosphere, which ensures all pupils feel valued and safe. Inspectors commended the high standards of behaviour, positive relationships among staff and pupils, and the commitment to tailoring provision for SEND and vulnerable pupils. Parental confidence was also recognised, with families reporting satisfaction in regular communication and in involvement in planning for SEND provision.
In response to recommendations the school has taken steps to further embed adaptive teaching across year groups, particularly for pupils with complex needs. Initiatives include additional training for staff on supporting diverse learning needs, increased opportunities for parental partnership in co-producing individual learning plans, and refinements to assessment approaches to ensure meaningful feedback and targeted interventions. The school has also prioritised early literacy and reading strategies, adapting phonics and guided reading sessions to address individual barriers. These actions reflect an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and sustaining high standards in inclusion and pupil outcomes.
While Brompton Community Primary School is lauded for its strong leadership and culture of high expectations, there remain areas for development that should be prioritised by the incoming headteacher. According to the latest OFSTED framework (EIF 2025), particular attention should be given to:
- embedding consistency in curriculum delivery
- ensuring all pupils, especially those with SEND, receive tailored support to access learning effectively.
Additionally, further work is needed to refine assessment practices so that they precisely inform teaching and address gaps in knowledge.

Pupil achievement, attainment and progress
Pupils at Brompton Community Primary School benefit from a warm, inclusive environment where they develop strong learning behaviours and make good progress across a creative, skills‑based curriculum. The school’s emphasis on early reading and literacy provides a secure foundation for future learning, and external data highlights particularly strong progress in mathematics and writing, with above‑average outcomes in reading and notable success for disadvantaged pupils. Ofsted recognises the school’s positive relationships, high standards of behaviour and commitment to ensuring all pupils, including those with SEND, feel valued and able to achieve well. As the school continues to refine assessment practices and embed consistency in curriculum delivery, the next Headteacher will build on these strengths to ensure every child continues to thrive academically, socially and personally
Budget position
Like many schools nationally, Brompton is planning thoughtfully for the years ahead. Current financial forecasts model a worst‑case scenario, but the school has already identified positive opportunities to reduce pressure - from creative class organisation to natural staffing changes and a continued focus on attracting new families. These proactive steps mean the school is well‑placed to manage the situation sensibly and with minimal disruption.
The next Headteacher will join a community that is solution‑focused and committed to long‑term sustainability. Their leadership will help guide strategic decisions and ensure resources continue to support the high‑quality, inclusive education the school is known for.
Short term priorities (0–6 months): The forthcoming retirement of the Headteacher this summer marks an important moment of change for the school. Ensuring a smooth transition will be essential to protecting our inclusive ethos and sustaining the strong progress already made in SEND provision. Key priorities include guiding staff confidently through the change, maintaining clear and consistent communication with parents and stakeholders, and securing appropriate interim leadership arrangements. At the same time, we remain committed to high‑quality support for SEND and vulnerable pupils, particularly through the continued embedding of effective adaptive teaching across all year groups.
Mid-term priorities (6–18 months): Following the leadership transition, the school will focus on the successful recruitment and induction of a new Headteacher to ensure stability and a clear strategic direction. Addressing the projected budget deficit in three years’ time will be essential; this includes undertaking a comprehensive review of expenditure, exploring opportunities for additional income, and establishing a sustainable long‑term financial plan. Strengthening partnerships with parents, particularly around co‑producing learning plans and supporting key transitions, remains a priority. The school will also continue to refine assessment practices and develop inclusive literacy provision, ensuring that SEND interventions are effective, targeted and sustainable. For the next Headteacher, this means leading with financial acumen, strategic clarity and a strong commitment to inclusive practice, while building trusted relationships with staff, families and the wider community.
Long term Ambitions
Over the coming years, the next Headteacher will need navigate shifting demographic patterns, including a small reduction in pupil numbers and increased local competition. Alongside national funding pressures, these changes will require thoughtful and transparent decisions about staffing and budget planning. The challenge will be to balance financial sustainability with the ongoing commitment to high‑quality provision and the inclusive ethos that sits at the heart of the school. Long‑term stability will depend on clear priorities, strong relationships and a shared dedication to meeting the needs of every child.
North Yorkshire
North Yorkshire is England's largest county and one of the most rural. The area comprises the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a stunning coastline around Scarborough and Whitby. There are ruined castles and abbeys, serene gardens, unique breweries, thrilling rides and industrial heritage. The area hosted the phenomenal Tour de France ‘Grand Depart’ in 2014 and has since created the Tour de Yorkshire, an annual event with global recognition. Our success in supporting these events led to Harrogate hosting the UCI Cycling World Championships in 2019.
North Yorkshire has plenty to offer the outdoor enthusiast. From the hard gritstone of Almscliff and Brimham rocks to the limestone of Malham, Gordale and Kilnsey climbing venues are in abundance. The Yorkshire Dales is the premier area for caving and for mountain biking; there are the bridleways of the Dales and North York Moors as well as the renowned trail centre at Dalby Forest. There are a small number of sailing clubs on reservoirs around the county and fantastic surfsport venues and sea kayaking on the east coast.
While the county is rightly known for its wide open spaces, it also incorporates attractive market towns including Pickering and Helmsley, traditional seaside towns, the Spa town of Harrogate and the ancient city of York - the most visited city outside of London. There are a wide range of shopping, leisure and cultural facilities as well as excellent schools, universities, road and rail links, there really is everything to offer you and your family as a place to work, live and enjoy!

Travelling further afield we have convenient connectivity, with close proximity to metropolitan cities of Leeds and Newcastle, with little over two hours commute on the main train line to London. We border the Lake District, Lancashire, County Durham, and Yorkshire & Humber regions with all they have to offer.
You can find out more about what North Yorkshire has to offer on the Visit North Yorkshire website.
