Welcome
Welcome and thank you for your interest in learning more about City of York Council and our Assistant Director of Culture, Growth and Infrastructure role.
This is a new, pivotal and exciting opportunity for an inspiring leader to help shape York's future prosperity and deliver lasting benefits for our residents, businesses and communities.
As Director of City Development, I am passionate about York, a progressive, inclusive and sustainable city that places the wellbeing of its residents at the heart of everything it does, whilst protecting the heritage, character and culture of this world-famous city with UNESCO status.
York has much to be proud of. It is one of the most productive cities in the North, with high levels of employment, above-average wages, an outstanding education system and a highly skilled workforce. It is also widely recognised as a wonderful place to live, work, study and visit.
The city is entering an exciting period of transformation. The Council is leading the development of the new Local Plan (York 2045), working closely with the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, developers and partners to unlock significant opportunities for growth. This includes the delivery of York Central, one of the largest brownfield regeneration sites in England, the development of more affordable housing, and investment in sustainable transport and infrastructure. Alongside this, we are committed to becoming a net-zero city by 2030, with major renewable energy projects and strategic business cases already underway.
This role will play a critical part in delivering these ambitions. Reaching every part of the city, you will help drive a programme of more than £500 million of capital investment, unlocking economic, health and environmental benefits and creating a lasting legacy for current and future generations.
Recognised in the Northern Growth Plan as being at the crossroads of east-west and north-south connectivity, York has significant untapped economic potential. As a key member of the City Development Directorate leadership team, reporting directly to me, you will lead the Council's strategic approach to culture, growth and infrastructure. You will further strengthen York's reputation regionally, nationally and internationally, secure inward investment and ensure that the city is well positioned to seize future opportunities.
You will find a role that offers both professional challenge and genuine influence. York is large enough to provide the complexity, scale and ambition that make local government leadership rewarding, yet small enough to enable you to make decisions, build relationships and see the impact of your work. This high-profile role offers an outstanding opportunity to make a significant difference while further developing your career.
Our residents, businesses and communities work hard for this city and inspire each other to be welcoming, ambitious and successful. If you are excited by the opportunity to contribute to the next phase of York's journey, we would be delighted to hear from you.
